To grasp the human to human value conflict around 399, take last week’s big JHN&G article. The following was said by an agency official, “People don’t understand …,” “Allegation of ulterior motivations …. are offensive,” and “Do people think we get into this career so we can go out and kill bears?” Agency personnel are taking things personally, as do most of us.

factorsIndividuals and institutions share different values which give people different perspectives of the problem and what should be done. When people are not aware of their standpoint, different perspectives become polarized with distrust. People will create groups that support their beliefs and perspectives. Most people share the same values and goals (i.e. healthy landscape and human dignity) but we lack the language to communicate across our different perspectives to see past our differences to a commonality.
